The Sabae Azalea Festival is held at Nishiyama Park in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. First held in 1960, this spring festival is now in its 65th edition, offering visitors the spectacle of 50,000 azalea plants blooming throughout the park. Around 200,000 people attend each year, coloring Sabae's spring. During the festival, many food stalls line the grounds, and there are a food area featuring Sabae-produced foods, stage events, and a kids' corner. There are also plenty of hands-on spots for all ages, including excavation experiences, a tea ceremony seat, and a free eyeglass cleaning corner. In addition, the nighttime 'Adults' Azalea Festival' features live music and street performances, bringing liveliness day and night.
Getting there
About 1 minute on foot from Nishiyama Park Station on the Fukui Railway. About 20 minutes on foot from Sabae Station on the Hapi-Line Fukui. About 5 minutes by car from Sabae IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. During the festival, surrounding roads are congested, so use the temporary parking lot at Sand Dome Fukui (shuttle bus available).
