The Shiogama Minato Festival is held every year in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, on Marine Day in July. It is a boat festival in which the mikoshi (portable shrines) of Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine are carried around Matsushima Bay. It was once held on August 5, but today it is timed to Marine Day. The venue is within Shiogama and on Matsushima Bay, and a fireworks display is held the day before as a eve-of-festival event. The heart of the festival is a sea parade in which the two mikoshi of the two shrines are installed aboard a gozabune (attendant boat) and accompanied by around a hundred decorated escort boats as they tour Matsushima Bay. This spectacle is counted as one of Japan's three great boat festivals. On land, a Yoshiko Shiogama contest is held, and a parade with as many as 3,000 participants brings color to the city.
