The Kurihara Manyo Festival is a "earth and fire festival" held every year on a Sunday in late September at the Kaze no Sawa Museum (Satoyama Park) in Ichihasama, Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is organized by the Tarachine no Kai, and visitors can enjoy the flames of open-field firing and traditional performing arts. The festival began as a requiem for the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake. The first edition was held the same year, and the underlying wish is for the region's recovery and the passing on of its culture. On the day, visitors fire pottery they made in advance, and a highlight is the sight of huge objects several meters tall being fired. At the same time, there are stage events presenting traditional performing arts mainly from Tohoku. The venue is about 20 minutes by car from the Tohoku Expressway's Tsukidate IC, and about 25 minutes from JR Kurikoma-Kogen Station, and parking is free.
