Tamatori Festival is a traditional event on the sea held in the morning of August 24 at Itsukushima Shrine in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, and its starting time is determined by the day's tidal conditions. It has a history dating back to the Sengoku period, and its distinguishing feature is that young men from the town fiercely compete on the water for a sacred jewel that is said to bring good fortune. Even if the jewel is thrown and falls into the sea, the struggle continues, and it is said that whoever finally brings it to the announcement place will be promised good fortune in the future. The feats of these brave young men attract the attention of people visiting Itsukushima Shrine in summer.
