The Innoshima Suigun Festival is held at Innoshima Amenity Park (Shimanami Beach) in Innoshima, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and reenacts the Murakami Suigun, a naval clan based on Innoshima. Organized by the Innoshima Suigun Festival Executive Committee, it began in 1991, succeeding the 1980 "Chibikko Suigun Festival," and received the Furusato Event Award in 1999. It is currently held in two parts: the Sea Festival and the Island Fire Festival. In the Sea Festival, races are held using kobaya, wooden boats that served as messenger vessels for the Murakami Suigun, with 16 people—14 rowers plus a helmsman and a drummer—competing over a course of about 1 km. In the Island Fire Festival, armored warriors gather on the beach at night, parade large torches, perform the Suigun Chōrakumai dance, and fireworks are launched. Past editions also included an Island Festival, in which sacred fire was received from Konren Temple, the family temple of the Innoshima Murakami clan, and a Fire Festival, in which 100 armored warriors entered the formation carrying torches.
