Sendai Michinoku YOSAKOI Matsuri (commonly called Michiyosa) is a YOSAKOI-style festival held in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, over two days on a Saturday and Sunday in early October. Performance venues are set up across the city, including Kotodai Park, Ichibancho, Sendai Station area, Izumi Chuo, Taihaku Mori Park, and Nagamachi, with teams from Hokkaido to Kansai performing. The event began when a university student from Miyagi studying in Kochi took part in the Kochi Yosakoi Festival in 1997, and it was first held in 1998. In 2008 it drew 750,000 visitors over two days, growing into the fifth-largest festival of its kind in Japan. In 2024 it was changed to its current name. Highlights include the Jozendera YOSAKOI Parade along Jozendera-dori and the Ichibancho Parade through the arcade streets. Since 2007, the Michinoku YOSAKOI Contest has also been held, with various awards presented, and at the venues a "so-odori" (mass dance) is performed in which spectators can freely join.
