Sendai Hatsuuri is a traditional New Year event held simultaneously every year from January 2 in the shopping streets of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, and has continued since the feudal era. It is said that the year in Sendai begins with this first sale, and a review committee with the Sendai Chamber of Commerce and Industry as its secretariat is involved in running it to improve Sendai Hatsuuri. In the past, lavish prizes were the main draw, but in recent years fukubukuro (lucky bags) and bonus gift certificates have become the focus, and the special deals unique to Sendai Hatsuuri attract many shoppers to the city. Some stores offer advance reservations for fukubukuro and extend the first-sale period, and the central area of Sendai is bustling with people visiting at the start of the year.
