🏮 Senbon Emma Do Dai Nenbutsu Kyogen

Senbon Enmadō Dainenbutsu Kyōgen is a traditional event handed down at Senbon Enmadō (Injō-ji Temple) in Kyoto, and is counted among the three great Nenbutsu Kyōgen of Kyoto. It is held every year from May 1 to 4, and performances in the temple grounds can be viewed free of charge. The origin dates back to the reign of Emperor Go-Komatsu, and it is said that Ashikaga Yoshimitsu encouraged the opening of this Dainenbutsu Kyōgen, owing to the origin of the Fugen-zō cherry tree blooming in the temple grounds. Unlike other Nenbutsu Kyōgen, the Enmadō kyōgen is characterized by having dialogue, and many of the pieces are comical and easy to understand, enjoyable for both children and adults. Performance times are 19:00 on weekdays, and 12:00 and 18:00 on holidays. The venue, Injō-ji Temple, is located immediately after getting off at the city bus stop Senbon Kuramaguchi, making it easy to visit casually.
