Gozan Okuribi is a traditional event held every year on August 16 from around 8:00 p.m. for about an hour, during which characters and shapes such as "dai" (great) and "funagata" (boat shape) appear on the mountains of Kyoto City. The okuribi (sending-off fire) has the meaning of sending off spirits, and it is maintained and operated by local people at each mountain.
