At Kawasaki Daishi in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Osame no Daishi Okitakijo Horyo (year-end Daishi fire-burning rite) is held on December 21. It is a year-end memorial service expressing gratitude for the past year, and as a December event at Kawasaki Daishi it proceeds alongside preparations to welcome the new year. In the same month, besides Jodo-e (December 8), which celebrates the day Shakyamuni attained enlightenment, susuharai (soot-sweeping) is carried out in the various halls of the temple grounds, purifying the site for the new year. On the day of Osame no Daishi, the okitakijo horyo is held together with a Daihannya-kyo tendoku-e (ceremony of ritually reading the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra), solemnly marking the close of the year.
