Every year on January 12, the Ome Daruma Market is held on the old Ome Kaido in Ome, Tokyo. About 300 street stalls line the old Ome Kaido, which continues from in front of JR Ome Station, and as a New Year tradition of the Tama region, it is one of the few remaining kaido markets. It is organized by the Ome Daruma Market Preservation Society, and in a typical year it draws about 14,000 visitors. Its origin is said to date back to the Rokusai market that began around Kakitsu 1 (1441), or around Bunroku 5 (1596). In the past, mayudama, rice flour shaped like cocoons, were sold to pray for the prosperity of sericulture, but about 180 years ago daruma also came to be handled as lucky charms. The highlight is the rows of bright red daruma lining the old Ome Kaido. People seeking business prosperity, success in exams, or good matchmaking come from distant places to buy them. On the day, osame daruma are accepted in front of Sumiyoshi Shrine, and it is carried on as a traditional event welcoming the New Year.

Getting there

Get off at JR Ome Line "Ome Station" and it is immediately nearby. About 10 minutes from Ken-O Expressway "Ome IC." During the event, the old Ome Kaido is subject to traffic restrictions, so avoid coming by car.
