Every New Year's Day at early dawn, the Odawara New Year First Swim is held at Miyukinohama Beach in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is organized mainly by members of the Odawara Swimming Association and local swimming clubs, with involvement from the Odawara City Tourism Division. It is an annual event in which participants enter the sea in the new year amid the low temperatures of midwinter and cold water. This first swim carries the meaning of wishing for safety in the sea and good health for the year, and is held at early dawn on New Year's Day. On the day, at around 6:50 a.m., after confirming the first sunrise rising from the horizon, participants enter the sea and begin swimming. Many spectators visit the beach, and the sight of people swimming in the sea dyed orange and the viewing of the New Year's sunrise are highlights.
