The Noboribetsu Hell Festival is held in Noboribetsu Onsen in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, every year on the last Saturday and Sunday of August. It is based on the legend that the lid of the hell cauldron opens at Jigokudani (Hell Valley) and Enma Daiō, leading a troop of demons, visits the hot spring town. Venues include Noboribetsu Onsen Gokuraku-dori, Senge Park, and Jigokudani. The festival's origins lie in the Onsen Festival, which began in 1951 when Shikotsu-Toya National Park was designated, and in 1964 it was relaunched with new content as the first Noboribetsu Hell Festival. Highlights include Enma Daiō, who parades along Gokuraku-dori only once a year, as well as Noboribetsu drums, demon dances, and an oni mikoshi (portable shrine) carried by students of Noboribetsu Junior High School. The powerful events, which recreate the world of hell, color the hot spring town.
