The Kitamura Countryside Festival (Kitamura Kappe Festival) is held every year on the third Saturday and Sunday of August at Kitamura Central Park Fureai Plaza in the former Kitamura district of Iwamizawa, Hokkaido. It is a summer festival that the Iwamizawa City Tourism Association ranks as one of the "Five Great Festivals of Iwamizawa." It began in 1989 with the goal of creating a new festival unique to "Suigo Kitamura," an area surrounded by lakes, marshes, and rice paddies, and even after the merger with Iwamizawa the concept has been carried on and the festival continues to be held. Highlights include events unique to the water country, such as the "Wa~ruzo Cup" and the "World Marsh Raft Crossing Race," as well as the "Kachiumi Mikoshi" (winning-water portable shrine), in which participants are doused with "power water" from the audience in honor of the ancestors who struggled against floods, and an open-air market offering Kitamura's specialty loach dishes. On the night of the first day, the "Numagami Renpatsu Fireworks Display" is held, and the magical effect of the fireworks reflected on Torokko Marsh captivates visitors.
