The Hakodate Port Festival is held in summer in the old town area of Hakodate, Hokkaido, and around Hakodate Port. It is currently organized by the Hakodate International Tourism and Convention Association, and every year it draws many local residents and tourists. The festival was started in 1935 by then-mayor Moriichi Sakamoto, together with a ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of the opening of Hakodate Port, to give the first anniversary of recovery from the 1934 Showa 9 Hakodate Fire meaning and to raise the morale of the citizens. It was originally held in July, but was later moved to August, when there is less rain, and it has continued every year except for an interruption during the war. Highlights include the Doshin Fireworks Display, launched from Midori no Shima in Hakodate Port, and the Wasshoi Hakodate parade, held on two routes, Jujigai and Goryokaku. Citizens dance and parade through the streets performing the Ika Odori and Hakodate Minato Odori, and there are also dashi floats and mikoshi (portable shrines). About 80 food stalls line up in front of Hakodate Station.
