The Otaru Tide Festival is held around the Third Pier of Otaru Port in Otaru, Hokkaido, for three days starting two days before the last Sunday of July each year, organized by the Otaru Tide Festival Executive Committee, and is a summer tradition in Otaru. The festival's predecessor was the Minato Otaru Commerce, Industry and Tourism Festival, which began in 1959, but in 1967 it was reborn as the Otaru Tide Festival with the meaning of taking a fresh look at Otaru, which had developed through the sea and its port. From the second edition it moved to Otaru Park, but from the 15th edition in 1981 it returned to the Third Pier, where it has become established as the current venue. The first day opens with the Tide Prelude and the Offering of Sacred Water, in which seawater from Ishikari Bay is offered. On the second day, about 6,000 people parade from Hanazono Green Road to the Third Pier while dancing the Otaru Tide Dance in the Tide Parade. On the final day, fishing boats and roofed pleasure boats take part in the Tide Crossing and the Tide Citizens' Regatta, and a large fireworks display of 2,000 to 3,000 shells colors the night sky over Otaru Port.
