The Higashikawa Ice Festival is held at Hagoromo Park in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, on the weekend of the third week of January each year. At the venue, an ice sculpture contest is held in which participants complete ice sculptures within a limited 24-hour period and compete on their beauty, and a snow sculpture contest is also held with groups creating works. The mini snowmen and ice lanterns decorating the area around the venue are also worth seeing, and the fireworks display launched on the evening of the first day draws many people who come to see the fireworks shining in the clear night sky. Food stalls also open, offering warm drinks to heat up chilled bodies and tasty light meals, making this an event where you can experience winter in Higashikawa.
