Mibu Kyogen is held at Mibu Temple in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, and is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in which Buddhist teachings are performed as silent theater. Mibu Temple, the venue, is a temple in Kyoto accessible from the city bus stop "Mibudera-michi" or Hankyu "Omiya" Station, and it is held every year in October as a regular festival. Its origins go back to the Kamakura period, when it is said to have begun with monks explaining Buddhist teachings to the people through gestures in an easy-to-understand way. Its form as silent theater without dialogue is a precious performing art that conveys the approach to proselytizing of that time to the present. Every year from October 10 to 12, five pieces are performed per day from 13:00 until around 17:30. Audiences can experience the interest of Buddhist silent theater directly within the temple grounds.
Getting there
Get off at the city bus stop "Mibudera-michi," then walk 5 minutes. Get off at Hankyu Kyoto Line "Omiya" Station, then walk 10 to 15 minutes.
