At Kukuzo Horin-ji Temple in Saga and Arashiyama, Kyoto, the Spring Thirteen Pilgrimage is held each year for about two months from March 13. It is a traditional event in which children who have reached the age of 13 by the old counting system visit to receive wisdom and good fortune from Kukuzo Bosatsu, the bodhisattva who governs wisdom and the arts. The period around April 13, the middle day, is especially busy. The temple's origins date back to 829, when Doshou enshrined Kukuzo Bosatsu, and it is said the temple was renamed Horin-ji, its present name, in 876. The event's origin lies in the coming-of-age ceremonies of court nobles, and it has a long history. A notable point is the tradition concerning the Togetsu Bridge after one's visit. It is said that if you turn back before crossing the bridge completely, you return the wisdom you received. Prayers in the temple grounds are accepted from 9:00 to 16:00, with no reservation required and conducted in order.
