At White Cube (Shiroishi City Cultural and Sports Activity Center) in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, the 68th All-Japan Kokeshi Competition and the 31st Shiroishi City Local Products Festival are held each year around Constitution Memorial Day in May. Kokeshi are submitted from all over the country, and craftsmen compete in skill at this one of Japan's leading kokeshi festivals. At the venue, in addition to traditional kokeshi from various parts of Tohoku, including the local Yajiro-style kokeshi known for their lathe patterns, new-style kokeshi and creative kokeshi are gathered together. Visitors can view the submitted works up close, and lathe demonstrations by craftsmen are also held, allowing a close look at the artistry of the craft. The concurrently held Local Products Festival sells specialty products from Shiroishi City and neighboring municipalities. Access is convenient, about a 5-minute walk from Shiroishi-Zao Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen.
