Kariya Mantō Festival is a summer festival at Akiba Shrine in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, designated an intangible folk cultural property of Aichi Prefecture. Praying for a good harvest and protection from fire, young men carry mantō (decorated lantern figures) about 5 meters tall and 60 kilograms in weight, made of bamboo and washi paper, and dance to hayashi music of flutes and drums. Its origin dates back to the construction of Akiba Hall (now Akiba Shrine) in 1756, and an old document states that mantō appeared in the festival of 1778. Mantō were also used in a rain-making prayer in 1852, and from the early Showa era it came to be called the Mantō Festival. On the final Saturday of July, about 20 large mantō from seven shrine parishes and other groups parade through the city, and on the following day, dances are dedicated at Akiba Shrine. The vividly colored giant mantō emerge in the evening darkness, and the powerful performances are a highlight.
