The Hoyō Festival is held annually on March 15 at Tagata Shrine in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a major festival praying for a bountiful harvest of the five grains and prosperity of descendants. It is a city-designated intangible folk cultural property that includes elements of the Dōsojin Festival and the Dengaku Festival, and on the day, the shrine grounds are filled with worshippers from countries around the world. In the format of welcoming the male deity Takanenukahi no Mikoto to the enshrined deity Tamahime no Mikoto, it is told locally as the "festival where the bridegroom comes." Originally it originated from the Ta-asobi performed on the lunar New Year's Day on the 15th day of the first month, and along with the postwar commercialization, since 1954 a large phallic object over 2 meters long has been made. The highlight is the mikoshi procession, which departs from the nearby Shinmei Shrine and Kumano Shrine alternately as the otabisho. The "mikoshi" containing the seated statue of the goddess, the vermilion-lacquered "Gozen Mikoshi" containing the statue of Takanenukahi no Mikoto, and the black-lacquered "Yōbutsu Mikoshi" carrying the large phallic object newly carved each year from Kiso cypress are paraded, and 42-year-old yakudoshi men carry them vigorously. After a diverse procession including the "Goninshū" selected by lottery and Sarutahiko, the grand festival is held in the shrine grounds, and the festival reaches its climax with the scattering of 5,000 rice cakes. In addition, when the large sacred sakaki tree arrives at the shrine grounds, the sight of the crowd competing to get the leaves is also a characteristic.
