Inuyama Festival is a rite of Hachimangu Shrine said to have begun in the 12th year of the Kanei era (1635) in the Edo period, and is held on the first Saturday and Sunday of April each year. Thirteen yamaboko (festival floats), designated tangible folk cultural properties of Aichi Prefecture, and three nerimono (parade pieces) tour the castle town, with highlights including the dedication of karakuri puppets and nighttime processions lit by lanterns. In 2016 it was inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and has also been designated an important intangible folk cultural property of the nation.
Getting there
About a 10-minute walk from Inuyama Station on the Meitetsu Inuyama Line. Alternatively, about 15 minutes by car from Komaki Higashi IC on the Chuo Expressway. Parking is crowded during the festival, so use of public transportation is recommended.
