Ichiyo Shogatsu Nanbu Bairin Hiraki Ogitamatsuri is a traditional event held at Kasuga Shrine in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. It takes place on the first day of the snake in January and is also called "Ichiyo Shogatsu" (one-night New Year), a custom in which the New Year's celebrations are redone on this day alone. At Nanbu Bairin, the blossoming of plum trees is celebrated, and prayers are offered for a bountiful harvest and good health. Highlights include Shinto rituals, the opening of the plum grove, and offerings of amazake (sweet rice drink) and mochi (rice cakes) — observances that feel solemn yet convey the arrival of spring.
