The Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri is a summer festival held in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, over three days each year from August 5 to 7. Dancers wearing glossy hats decorated with benihana, the flower of Yamagata, parade through the midsummer streets performing the Hanagasa Ondo while calling out phrases such as "Flower Yamagata, Autumn Leaves Tendo..." The highlight is the parade, which reaches its peak in front of Yamagata City Hall, where paid viewing seats are also provided. Visitors can join the Hanagasa dance on the spot in the free participation corner twice a day. The appearance of the bright and lively Miss Hanagasa also adds color to the festival.
Getting there
About 15 minutes on foot from Yamagata Station, or immediately after getting off at "Shiyakusho-mae" on the city loop bus "Beni-chan Bus."
