It is a float festival consisting of a Yoimatsuri (eve festival), Honmatsuri (main festival), and Atomatsuri (after-festival), and is registered as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Getting there
About 5 minutes on foot from JR Shinjo Station. By car, about 1 hour from Furukawa IC on the Tohoku Expressway, or about 1 hour from Sagae IC on the Yamagata Expressway. Temporary parking is available nearby (traffic restrictions are in place during the festival).
