In Hiroo, a fishing town in southern Tokachi, the Hiroo Kegani Festival is held every December at Seaside Park Hiroo. Organized with the involvement of the Hiroo Town Fisheries, Commerce and Tourism Division and the Hiroo Town Tourism Association, this event is a regular fixture for enjoying the rich seafood landed locally, and many visitors come seeking shiomake salmon for the New Year. The highlight of the festival is the demonstration sale of kegani (hairy crab) boiled in a 2-meter-wide cauldron, alongside other fresh seafood such as shishamo, ikura, squid, and tsubu. At the direct-from-source sales corner, freshly caught local specialties can be bought at farm-gate prices, and free warm drinks and a lucky draw are also offered, enlivening Hiroo in winter.

Getting there

About 120 minutes by bus from JR Obihiro Station. Free parking available at the venue (about 1,200 spaces).
