The Higashino Sumiyoshi Festival is held every year on August 13 at Higashino Sumiyoshi Shrine in Higashino, Osakikamijima, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is organized by groups including the Higashino Traditional Culture Preservation Committee of Osakikamijima and the Kaitenma Steering Committee, and continues as a local summer event. This festival, which boasts a 200-year tradition, features the Kaitenma Race, a vigorous sea race held mainly around Shirozu Port. After the ceremony, four races are held in total, in the morning and afternoon, and visitors can also take part in a trial ride. At night, lanterns are hung along the coastline, and their light warmly illuminates the nighttime festival. From 20:10, a sea fireworks display of about 2,000 shells is launched around Shirozu Port, bringing the festival to a close.
