The Kokiriko Festival is held every year on September 25 and 26 at the grounds of Hakusan Shrine in Kamishitani, Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, and is one of the representative festivals of Gokayama, along with the Mugiya Festival. Elegant dances are offered to the accompaniment of flutes and drums echoing through the shrine grounds, set to plaintive melodies. During the daytime portion, kokiriko dances are performed as offerings at Hakusan Shrine at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both days, and folk songs and lion dances are also held on a specially set-up stage in front of the Kokiriko Hall. In the evening, a stage competition is held. In particular, at the "Kokiriko Soodori" (grand kokiriko dance), while local people form a circle and dance, spectators are also free to join the circle and dance together while sounding sasara. The appeal is that visitors can directly experience the traditional festival.

Getting there

20 minutes by car from Gokayama IC on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. From Ainokaze Toyama Railway Takaoka Station, take the JR Johana Line and get off at Johana (50 minutes), then take the Kaetsuno Bus and get off at Kamishitani (30 minutes).
