The Fude Kuyo, held every year on November 23 at Shokaku-an, a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, is an annual event in which worn-out brushes are burned in a ceremony of thanks. Shokaku-an is also known as the Temple of Brushes, and enshrines Tenjin in its Itokudo hall. The temple was founded in the Kamakura period by Date Masayori, and has had a brush mound since the Edo period. Started to bring vitality back to postwar Kyoto, this festival continues to convey gratitude for long-used brushes and respect for culture. On the day, a procession of a mikoshi (portable shrine) and chigo (child attendants) is held from 1:00 p.m., and at 2:00 p.m. yamabushi shoot purification arrows at the goma altar as the brushes are memorialized. In the grounds, tea seats and light meals such as soba and oden (for a fee) are also offered, and visitors can spend an autumn day viewing the garden of autumn leaves.
Getting there
From JR Kyoto Station, about 20 minutes by bus, get off at the Tofuku-ji bus stop, then 5 minutes on foot. Alternatively, get off at Keihan Railway Tofuku-ji Station, then 10 minutes on foot.
