For three days each year from November 18 to 20, the Ebisu Festival is held at Ebisu Shrine in Kucho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima City. Along with the Tokasan Festival and the Sumiyoshi Festival, it is one of Hiroshima's three great festivals. Locally it is also called Ebisu-ko, an autumn festival that heralds the arrival of winter in Hiroshima, honoring the guardian deity of prosperous business. With a history of about 400 years, the festival features a 'seimon-barai' (year-end clearance sale) in the shopping streets around the shrine, where people seeking business prosperity buy 'komazarae' (bamboo rakes), lucky items decorated with large coins and treasure ships. In recent years, a new event called 'Ebes-san' has been held under the keyword 'Laugh, Hiroshima, Ebisu face.' On the evening of the 20th, Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian paradise, where night kagura and taiko drum performances are presented.
