Dikon-daki at Senbon Shakado (Daihoon-ji Temple) is a traditional event held every year on December 7 and 8, together with a Jodo-e memorial service commemorating Shakyamuni's enlightenment. Daikon radishes boiled in a large pot are served to visitors in prayers for good health and freedom from illness. The festival began in the Kamakura period, originating when, during the memorial service of that time, Sanskrit characters were written on the cut ends of daikon radishes to pray for the repulsion of various illnesses. Even today, after the memorial service, daikon radishes inscribed with Sanskrit characters are given incantations and prayers, then sliced into rounds and simmered together with fried tofu before being offered. Believed to bring benefits against paralysis and various illnesses, this sight, visited by many people, is loved as a seasonal scene of Kyoto in December. Reception is from 10:00 to 16:00, and the daikon-daki can be eaten for 1,000 yen.
