At Anahachiman Shrine in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, the Toji Festival is held each year on the winter solstice in December. From this day until Setsubun, the shrine distributes its Ichiyo Raifuku charm, said to be the only one of its kind in the country. This charm has been bestowed at the solstice fortune-deity rite since the mid-Edo period and is also called the "charm for the free flow of gold and silver." Its origin lies with the mallet of the fortune deity Daikoku; it is said to be a treasure that Emperor Shomu received from a dragon deity on the winter solstice in the seventh year of Yoro, and that the court noble Minase family presented it to the shrine. On the day of the rite, distribution of the Ichiyo Raifuku charm begins, and there is a custom of enshrining it facing the eho (auspicious direction) of one's home or company. During the period from the winter solstice to Setsubun, it is generally enshrined on three auspicious days a year, including New Year's Eve and the day of Setsubun.
