At Jōshōji Temple in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, the Yoshino Tayū Hana Kuyō is held in memory of the famed early Edo-period courtesan Yoshino Tayū II. The temple has a Yoshino Gate said to have been donated by the tayū, preserving a glimpse of the elegant world of that time. On the day, a tayū dōchū procession is held, in which a Shimabara tayū, accompanied by kamuro attendants, walks from the Yoshino Gate to the main hall in a lavish uchikake robe. In the temple grounds, a tea ceremony seating is set up with advance registration, where participants can enjoy tea. There are also dedicatory performances by Shimabara tayū and artists, offering a special time woven from history and performing arts.

Getting there

Immediately after getting off at the city bus stop Jōshōji-mae. About 15 minutes from JR Kyoto Station on city bus route 9, or from Kitano Station on the Karasuma Subway Line on city bus Kita 1 route.
