At Yasaka Shrine in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, the Setsubun Kigan-sai and Setsubun-sai are held every year on February 2 and 3. Held at the shrine's dance hall (maiden) within the grounds, these are Shinto rituals praying for worshippers' protection from misfortune, good health, and happiness in accordance with the Setsubun season. This festival is positioned as a Shinto ritual to drive away calamity at the turning point of the year and pray for peace throughout the year, with rituals held on the 2nd for the Setsubun Kigan-sai and on the 3rd for the Setsubun-sai. The main events on both days are the bean-scattering (mamemaki) held at the dance hall and dance offerings by the four geisha districts (hanamachi). Worshippers are given special items bestowed only during the Setsubun-sai period, such as fukumame (lucky beans) and kushifuda (skewer charms). This is a Setsubun event unique to Yasaka Shrine, where Kyoto's geisha district culture and the shrine's traditions come together.
