In the area around the Site of Kira's Residence (Honjo Matsuzaka-cho Park) in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, the Kira Festival, Genroku Market, and Gishi Festival are held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of the second week of December. Centered on the Gishi Festival, organized by the Ryogoku Federation of Neighborhood Associations, and the Kira Festival, held together with the Genroku Market since 1972, they are known as a year-end tradition in this place, the setting of the raid. The Gishi Festival has been held since 1950 on December 14, the day of the raid, to memorialize both the 47 Ako ronin and the 20 Kira retainers who died defending their master in the raid. The Kira Festival has been held since 1972 with the aim of memorializing Kira Kozuke no Suke's 20 retainers. At the Genroku Market, more than 80 stalls sell clothing, food, and other goods, and there are also chanko hot-pot stands, direct vegetable sales, and a sightseeing corner. On the day of the Gishi Festival, a ceremony including the recitation of a norito by the chief priest of Ushima Shrine is held, and after it ends, amazake is served. Incense sticks are also provided in front of the stone monument to the Kira retainers, and visitors turn their thoughts to memorializing both houses.
