The Toyohashi Gion Festival is an annual festival held over three days, centered on Yoshida Shrine in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, and run by a support association formed by volunteers from the eight parishioner neighborhoods. It began in 1124 as a Shinto ritual at the shrine, which enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and in the Edo period it became known nationwide as the 'Mikawa Yoshida Fireworks Festival.' The Mikawa region has a history as a gunpowder guard for the Edo shogunate, and its people were skilled in handling gunpowder; the bold tezutsu hanabi (handheld tube fireworks) have been passed down there for a long time. On the eve of the festival, the third Friday of July, large tubes, stray shells, and handheld tube fireworks are offered at Yoshida Shrine. The following Saturday, a large fireworks display is held on the banks of the Toyokawa River, and on Sunday, the main festival day, an imperial messenger presents offerings and the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession goes through the streets of Toyohashi, bringing the festival to a close.
