The Momohana Festival at Masumida Shrine in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, is held from April 1 to 3 and is the grand festival that announces the arrival of spring in Ichinomiya. Until the Edo period it was held on the third day of the third lunar month, the Peach Festival, but from the Meiji era onward April 3 became the regular festival day. It originates from the time when the Kiso River flowed nearby and worshippers sent peach branches downstream carrying their misfortunes away; even now peach branches are offered before the deities, and those involved decorate their caps and eboshi hats with peach blossoms. During the festival, on April 1 tanzaku (poem slips) and votive lights are displayed, and on April 2 a walking archery ritual performed by local high school students divines the year's harvest. On the final day, April 3, children's lion dances, horse offerings, yabusame (mounted archery), and a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession accompanied by a warrior parade make their way through the Motomachi-dori shopping street. Along with the festival floats displayed on the east and west sides of the approach to Masumida Shrine, a colorful spring event can be seen.
