In Takoshima Town, Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Takoshima Kiriko Festival is held every year on September 10 and 11 as the autumn festival of Takakurahiko Shrine. It is known for gorgeous kiriko (festival lantern floats) said to be among the most beautiful in the Noto region, their sculptures set in fully lacquered surfaces shining as they catch the light. This festival is the autumn festival of Takakurahiko Shrine, which has a history of more than 200 years, and its long-standing traditions are still carried on today. The highlight is the Hayafune Kyogen performed as an offering on the night of the 11th, which is designated an intangible folk cultural property of Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a valuable piece that carries the splendor of Edo culture into the present and is a signature feature of the festival. The powerful figures of the young people carrying the kiriko, and the sight of the mikoshi (portable shrine) and kiriko making their rounds, also add to the festival's excitement.
