The Suga Shrine Grand Festival is an annual rite held on the second Sunday of April at Suga Shrine in Kashiyama-cho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, and is also called the Kashiyama Dashi Festival. It is designated an intangible folk cultural property of Okazaki City, and is run by six shrine parishioner groups, with two groups serving as the year's organizers on a rotating basis every three years. Oral tradition holds that its origin dates to the Edo period, and its appearance is recorded in an 1875 (Meiji 8) record of festivals. It was once held as a Gion festival in the sixth month of the old lunar calendar, but shifted to April in the late Meiji period. A fire in 1893 (Meiji 26) burned all the dashi (festival floats), and the current four floats — Ryujin, Ho-o, Ebisu, and Irifune — were rebuilt or purchased from 1895 (Meiji 28) onward. On the day, after the floats are purified at 11:30 a.m., the four floats and the mikoshi (portable shrine) depart Suga Shrine, with a rest stop at the crossroads. There, the Karase group and the Miyakita group's "Hanagumi" join with the Charaboko float, and entertainment is presented. At Shinmei Shrine, the turnaround point, the year's organizers perform a musical accompaniment called the "Goshoran," and at the return procession into Suga Shrine, signal fireworks and mochi throwing are held, bringing the festival to a close.
