Shiogori Festival is a summer festival held every year from July 31 to August 1 at Gion Shrine in Ozu, Ehime. A traditional event dating back to the Heian period, it follows the tradition of the Gion Festival, which prays for the end of epidemics and a bountiful harvest. Its highlight is the bold river-crossing rite called the Shiogori Shinji, in which parishioners carrying a mikoshi (portable shrine) enter a nearby river and parade through it, splashing water. In the evening, fireworks are launched, and the area bustles with local people.
