At Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the Otaue Festival is held every year on the fifth day of the fifth month of the old lunar calendar. It is an ancient-style Shinto ritual for praying for a good harvest, in which 16 saotome (rice-planting maidens) chosen from 13 districts on the island perform the rice planting in traditional attire of white robes, red sashes, and hand and leg coverings. The festival's characteristic event is the dedication of hitorizumo (one-man sumo), in which Ichirikiyama wrestles with an invisible rice spirit. This Shinto ritual is closely tied to prayers for a good harvest and is now designated an intangible folk cultural property of Ehime Prefecture. Visitors can see a traditional festival unique to Omishima, woven from the pure rice planting of the saotome and the powerful one-man sumo.
