Shimai Tenjin is an annual event held on December 25 every year at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. Because both the birth date and death date of the enshrined deity Sugawara no Michizane are the 25th, the 25th of every month is designated as his enni (monthly memorial day), and the last such day of the year is called Shimai Tenjin. On this day, the shrine grounds are busy all day with worshippers praying for good fortune and freedom from misfortune as the year draws to a close, and a Tenjin-ichi market is held with many street stalls. Items available include daifukubai (plum of great fortune), iwai-bashi (celebration chopsticks), and otoso (spiced sake), and visitors can be seen combining their worship with preparations for the New Year.
