Shimai Kobo, held on December 21 at the year's end at Toji Temple in Kyoto, is the last Kobo market of the year. In the extensive grounds of the temple, registered as a World Heritage site, stalls line up selling antiques, household goods, used clothing, food, and plants. At Toji, the Kobo market is held on the 21st of every month, the monthly death anniversary of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), and on this day a memorial service called Mieku is held at Miedo Hall. The stalls opened for worshippers led to the current form of the Kobo market, and December 21, the last fair day of the year, is especially called Shimai Kobo. The highlight is the bustle of people seeking lucky items in preparation for the New Year. It is held from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and you can experience the atmosphere unique to the year's end.
