Shamisen Mochitsuki is a unique event held at Nagao Temple in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture. On a special stage set up within the temple grounds, people are shown pounding mochi to the light tones of the shamisen. The origins and history are unclear, but it is enjoyed as an event combining the area's traditional mochi pounding with music. The highlight is the sight of the mochi pounding, with the pestle swung down in time with the rhythm, harmonizing with the shamisen performance, and the finished mochi is sometimes served to visitors. It is often held as a New Year event, bringing smiles and liveliness to those who visit.
