The Kaiyo Town Sagicho is a New Year's event held in Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, organized and run by the Kaiyo Town Tourism Association. It takes place at multiple venues around town, including riverbeds and the coast, from January 13 to 14, and at many locations the fire is lit early in the morning around 6 to 7 a.m. This is a traditional New Year's event in which New Year's decorations such as shimenawa (sacred straw rope) and kadomatsu (pine decorations) are burned together with a mound made of shida fern and bamboo grass with strips of paper attached, praying for good health and freedom from illness for the year. The main venues are scattered around town, including Osato Matsubara Coast, the Kaifu River mouth and riverbed, beneath Shishikui Bridge, and Takegashima Uraiso. At each place, the shimenawa and kadomatsu are burned in a ritual disposal. Times may vary depending on the weather that day, so it is necessary to check in advance.
