On Oshima in Shima, Mie Prefecture, the Shiokake Festival (Oshima Festival) is held every year on the first day of the sixth month of the old lunar calendar. It is a traditional event in which ama divers and fishermen pray for safety at sea and large catches. It is said to have continued since the early Kamakura period, and at Oshima Shrine a ceremony is held in which mandofuda (amulets) received from Ise Jingu are returned aboard a mando boat. On the day of the festival, ama divers and fishermen offer abalone, turban shells, bonito, and other seafood caught that morning at Oshima Shrine and make a prayer visit. After the visit, the Shinto priest and the festival organizers board the mando boat and set out toward the shore. After that, the boats splash seawater on each other using buckets, ladles, and nowadays hoses as well, which is the origin of the name Shiokake Festival.

The nearest station is Kintetsu Ugata Station. About 15 minutes by bus from the station, get off at the final stop for Oshima and walk 5 minutes.
