Otoran-ki is a memorial gathering held every year on June 19, the anniversary of the death of writer Osamu Dazai, at Zenrin Temple in Mitaka, Tokyo. On this day, many fans from across the country visit the temple, where Dazai—who died in the Tamagawa Aqueduct—is buried, to pay their respects at his grave. On June 19, 1948, Dazai was found on his 39th birthday. From the following year, a memorial gathering organized mainly by friends was held at Zenrin Temple, and it was named "Otoran-ki" after the title of the short story "Otoran" (Cherries) that he wrote just before his death. A highlight of the day is the cherries (sakuranbo) offered at the grave. More than 75 years after his death, even now, on clear early summer days, people thinking of the deceased continue to visit without cease.
