The Ohana Matsuri is held every year on April 10 at Kotohira-gu Shrine in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture. In the season when Mount Zozu is tinted with cherry blossoms, it is known as a festival of gratitude to the gods that announces the arrival of true spring in the Sanuki region. Priests and shrine maidens form a procession from the main gate to the inner shrine, accompanied by the music of court musicians. The priests wear caps adorned with cherry blossoms, and the shrine maidens carry cherry branches, their graceful appearance bringing comfort to the divine spirit. At the main hall, offerings of seafood, river fish, mountain and field produce decorated with small cherry branches are presented, and the chief priest recites a norito prayer. Afterwards, the Yamato Dance and the Yaotome Dance are dedicated, and elegant dance and music set the scene for spring in Kotohira. After the ceremony, imayo songs are performed at the Ryokutai-den, and the joy of the new spring is shared.
