The Okayu Festival is a Shinto ritual held annually on January 15 at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. Known as a Koshogatsu event, it has been performed since ancient times to pray for good health and a bountiful harvest. On the day, azuki porridge cooked at the shrine is served to visitors, a custom associated with wishing for health and happiness in the year ahead. A ritual using the porridge to divine the year's fortune is also performed, and the festival is familiar as one of the traditional New Year events.
Getting there
To Shimogamo Shrine (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto), about 10 minutes on foot from Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan Electric Railway, or immediately upon getting off at the Shimogamo Jinja-mae city bus stop.
